PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in the metal finishing industry since the 1950s for a variety of purposes. PFAS, particularly PFOS, have been used as mist suppressants that are added to metal plating baths to prevent air emissions of toxic metal fumes. This was typically used in hard and decorative chrome plating to reduce the surface tension of the electrolyte solution.
Studies are showing that PFAS may have potential adverse human health and environmental impacts. This has led to the setting of health-based standards, including mandatory orders for various entities requiring investigation of potential PFAS contamination.
The Canadian Minister of the Environment and Climate Change recently announced a motion that PFAS substances (A class of 4,700 chemcials) would be added to toxic substances list under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
Phase 1 of the proposed regulatory process would eliminate the use of PFAS in firefighting foams by 2027. Phase 2 would begin with a consultation process that would aim to eliminate the use of the chemical in a number of consumer goods.
PFAS chemicals are actively used in Canada in hard chrome plating fume suppressants.
Dynamix is proud to offer the plating industry a completely PFAS/PFOS/Fluoride Free fume suppressant for the Chrome Plating Industry – The Dynaplate Cr FSN2
It would appear it is only a matter of time before traditional fume suppressants will be eliminated in the chrome plating industry and it would be proactive to look into alternatives now. Substitute products that performed to previous standards did not exist until now. The Dynaplate Cr FSN2 is already being used in industry and can keep you operating within your surface tension limits, while keeping you off the PFAS radar.
